Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Soon To Be A Reality?

It looks like the dream fight between UFC megastar Conor McGregor and boxing royalty Floyd “Money” Mayweather, as McGregor was granted a boxing license on Wednesday by the state of California, according to a report by UFC president Dana White declined to comment when contacted by MMAJunkie.

McGregor has always boasted about being one of, if not the best fighter around, and had proven it with wins against Jose Aldo, with whom he took the UFC Featherweight championship from, and most recently, Eddie Alvarez, who he defeated for the UFC Lightweight championship. He became the first competitor in UFC history to hold two titles in two separate divisions, until he decided to relinquish the Featherweight gold this past week, which went right back to Aldo.

Before his fight with Alvarez, McGregor announced that he may have had some major news regarding his fight career, and that he may share it after the fight. Afterwards, he did, to say that he would become a father, and would take some time away from the sport, but, many felt that he was hiding a lot more than the happy news of an addition to his family.

Due to a dispute with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Conor McGregor had threatened to stay away from the heartland of combat sports, Las Vegas, NV, after NSAC fined him over $150,000 for a prefight scuffle with Nate Diaz, where McGregor threw water bottles at his opponent. McGregor would take his boasts to new heights after his victory at UFC 205 in New York City, when he would demand an ownership stake in the promotion in exchange for the attention and revenue that he has brought to the company.

Said McGregor:

“If you want to come at me, if you want me to stick around and help service that debt and continue to push the company, bring me on board, for real, I need to be set for life for this. If you want me to be truly on on board, then I need to be all-in on this proper, as an owner, and have an equity stake in the company. That’s what I’m looking for.”

Whether or not this was just another way for McGregor to garner attention to himself, or a true to life challenge to the retired champion Mayweather remains to be seen, however both parties have expressed in the past their desires to square off against each other, whether it be the octagon or the ring. If the license to McGregor means anything, it could truly lead to the true “Fight of the Century“.
