Red Sox Closer Craig Kimbrel To Miss 3-6 weeks Due To Knee Surgery

During pregame warmups on Friday, Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel tweaked his knee. He was unable to pitch for the Red Sox in their 6-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

It turns out that Kimbrel did more than just tweak his knee. Somehow, he damaged the cartilage in his left knee that now requires surgery.

Kimbrel was named to the AL All-star team after posting a 3.55 ERA and recording 17 saves in 34 appearances this season.

To fill the void that Kimbrel created, the Red Sox acquired Brad Ziegler from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ziegler has a 2.82 ERA and 18 saves in 36 appearances so far this season.

If Ziegler can pitch well for the Red Sox in Kimbrel’s absence, it will be interesting to see if Kimbrel keeps his job when he comes back.
