Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid star striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out against Rayo Vallecano for La Liga match this Saturday. The Portuguese is also doubtful for the team’s Champions League semi-final game at Manchester City.

Madrid’s head coach, Zinedine Zidane, said on Friday that Ronaldo’s injury “wasn’t serious,” but he could risk aggravating the muscle he pulled in his right leg if he played.

Zidane said he hoped Ronaldo would be back for Tuesday’s trip to England to face Manchester City in the first leg of their semi-final.

“He knows that he can’t be with us tomorrow, both he and the team are thinking about Tuesday,” Zidane said.

Shortly after Zidane’s press conference, Real Madrid issued a statement saying “Following tests carried out today on Cristiano Ronaldo… he has been diagnosed with a muscle strain in his right thigh.”

“His recovery will continue to be assessed,” the statement concluded.

Ronaldo, who has not missed a minute of La Liga or Champions League football this season, is now likely to be rested for Saturday’s match against Rayo Vallecano, while he could also miss the first leg of the Champions League semi-final with Manchester City on Tuesday.

Ronaldo leads La Liga in scoring this season with 31 goals and has 47 goals in 44 matches in all competitions. He currently leads the run for the Pichichi, followed only by Luis Suarez with 30 goals.

Real Madrid, however, continues to be the heavily favorite to win at Vallecas. They have won eight consecutive league matches and have beaten Rayo in their last 12 meetings.

The Merengues are trailing the league leaders Barcelona and second-place Atletico Madrid by one point with four rounds left in La Liga. A slump at Vallecas could possibly mean the end of La Liga run.
