Center has captained Canada in last two major tournaments

With the 2016 World Cup of Hockey about four weeks away, Team Canada made an announcement today that really doesn’t come as a surprise.

Canada announced that center Sidney Crosby will captain the team at this year’s tournament.

This is the third straight year where Crosby captains Canada at a major international tournament. He served as team captain at the 2014 Winter Olympics and at the 2015 IIHF World Championships.

The 29-year-old will be looking for his fourth straight gold medal at a major tournament. He was part of the Canadian teams that won gold at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, as well as at last year’s World Championships.

Winning the gold medal at last year’s World Championships put Crosby in the Triple Gold Club. He became the 26th player to join the “modern day fraternity” of players who have won Olympic gold, World Championship gold, and the Stanley Cup during their career.

Canada also announced that center Jonathan Toews and defenseman Shea Weber will serve as alternate captains.

Toews, also a member of the Triple Gold Club, and Weber were part of the 2010 and 2014 Olympic gold medal winning teams, as well.

The World Cup of Hockey gets underway on Sept. 17 and runs through Oct. 1 in Toronto.
