Cubs bolster bullpen depth.

The Chicago Cubs have made a trade with the Seattle Mariners to bolster their bullpen depth. They have acquired LHP Mike Montgomery and RHP Jordan Pries in exchange for 1B Dan Vogelbach and RHP Paul Blackburn.

The Cubs addressed a need in their bullpen by acquiring a go to lefty in Montgomery. In just his second big league season he has 2.34 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP in 61 and 2/3 innings this season for the Mariners. This could be a big move for the Cubs if it pans out as they have yet to find a late inning lefty. The Cubs also received 26-year-old right hander Jordan Pries who has started 12 games between AA/AAA and appeared in 20 so far this season with a 4.93 ERA.

The Mariners managed to get Dan Vogelbach a 23-year-old,left-handed hitting, first basemen, who has slashed .318/.425/.548 with 16 home runs and 64RBI in 89 games for AAA Iowa. Vogelbach could slot into the DH role as many scouts have had him labelled to be. Chicago also had to give up right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn. The 22-year-old has gone 6-4 with 3.17 ERA in 18 starts this year for AA Tennessee.
