Chicago Cubs Call Up top prospect Willson Contreras

The next hot prospect to be called up for the Chicago Cubs is catcher Willson Contreras.

Contreras was batting .350 with 9 homers and 43 RBI’s in 54 games at Triple-A.

Last season, Contreras won the Southern League batting title after hitting .333 in Double-A.

In order to make room for Contreras on the roster, Tim Federowicz has been designated for assignment. Federowicz had not been getting much playing time as the third catcher on the depth chart.

The 24 year old will backup Miguel Montero and David Ross but will get more playing time as the third catcher than Federowicz did.

Saturday, Contreras made him major league debut but did not get the chance to have an at-bat. The next night, Contreras made the most of a pinch-hit at-bat in the 6th inning.

On the first pitch that he saw, Contreras belted it over the center field fence for a two run homer.

That homer helped the Cubs go on to sweep the Pirates and take a 12.5 game lead in the NL Central. Contreras got his first major league start Monday as the St. Louis Cardinals visited Wrigley.

He batted 5th and went 1-4 with an RBI in the Cubs 3-2 loss.

Contreras will not see many starts but he will look to make the most of them as they come.
