Cubs Walk Their Way to 10 Straight Wins

Every player dreams of stepping to the plate in the last inning of a game and driving in the game winning run against their biggest rival.  On Thursday night in the bottom of the 11th inning, versus the St. Louis Cardinals, Anthony Rizzo got the chance to do just that.  It wasn’t quite the heroic big hit to win the game, but Rizzo would stand in and take a walk to force in the winning run and push the Cubs current winning streak to a season long 10 games.

For the first time since 1908 the Chicago Cubs have opened the month of August with a 9-0 record.  That’s right I said 1908.  Why is that special?  Well that just happens to be the last time the Chicago Cubs won a World Series.  The win would push the Cubs division lead to 13 games.

In the past people have always claimed that the games between these two teams were one of the best rivalries in baseball, but until recent years the Cubs were playing for something less than a World Series title.  The were trying to cause the power house Cards to stumble on their way to the post season.  Now that the Cubs have built one of the best teams in baseball, we can finally call this a true rivalry much like the Yankees and the Red Sox have become since the Red Sox became relevant again.

These two teams will be at it again on Friday as the Cardinals hope to cut down on the Cubs 13 game division lead.  The Cardinals will send Ace Adam Wainwright who is 10-1 in his career at Wrigley field, against Ace Jake Arrieta who has a 1.71 ERA in his 10 starts at Wrigley Field.

Arrieta hopes to extend the Cubs win streak and build off of his last start versus the A’s where he threw 8 scoreless innings and picked up the win.  First pitch will be at 2:20 EST.
