Danny Willett Wins 2016 Masters Tournament

After Jordan Spieth shot a stunning quadruple bogey at the 12th hole, Danny Willett seized the opportunity and captured the 2016 Masters Sunday. Danny became the first Englishman to win The Masters since Sir Nick Faldo did 20 years ago. He also became the first full fledged European Tour member to win The Masters since José María Olazábal did in 1999.

Nine holes away from history, the defending Masters champion threw it all away in a collapse around Amen Corner that was shocking even by Augusta National standards. He put two balls into the water and another in the sand as he not only saw his lead go away, but his title defense. He played the opening three holes of the back nine in 6 over par, including a quadruple bogey at the 12th.

Danny Willett, five shots behind with six holes left to play, birdied three of his last six holes to polish off a round that might not get its due because of Spieth’s meltdown. He closed with a 5-under 67, with no bogeys on his card, to match the best score of the weekend.

Spieth still had a chance when he birdied both par 5s to get within two shots with three to play. But he missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the 16th, and his bogey from the bunker ended all hope. He closed with a 73 and tied for second with Lee Westwood (69).

Also, Bryson DeChambeau was this years low amateur, shooting +5 over the tournament. The former SMU golfer beat out Frenchman Romain Langasque by 5 strokes. Bryson was in contention up until the 18th hole in the Second Round, where he never recovered from there.

As of yesterday, there had only been 15 holes-in-one in the history of The Masters. Today, three golfers earned that distinction on the same hole: lucky number 16. Shane Lowry, Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, and Louis Oosthuizen all achieved the same feat, a first for a single round of the Masters.

Finally, the top 12 and ties all earned births for next years Masters. Those names include Daniel Berger, Paul Casey, Matthew Fitzpatrick, J. B. Holmes, Dustin Johnson, Søren Kjeldsen, Hideki Matsuyama, Brandt Snedeker, Lee Westwood.
