La Liga

Madrid, Spain – Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has been handed a three-game touchline ban in La Liga following an incident last weekend when an extra ball was thrown on to the pitch during his side’s match at home against Malaga.

The 45-year-old Argentinian appeared to instruct a ball boy to throw a ball on to the pitch to disrupt a Malaga attack during Atletico’s 1-0 win on Saturday.

Simeone will not miss Atletico’s Champions semi-final first-leg at home to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, but will miss the final three games of the season against Rayo Vallecano on April 30, the trip to Levante on May 8 and the visit of Celta Vigo on May 15.

Atletico, currently going neck and neck with Barcelona and Real Madrid for La Liga title, are second to the leader Barcelona on goal differential.

The referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz asked Simeone who was responsible and sent him off after reportedly not getting an answer.

The Argentinian said afterwards he had no problem with the referee’s decision. “It’s clear that the referee made the right decision as per the regulations,” he said.

“He did what he had to do. There’s little more that can be said. The images will show it was a boy beside me, but that doesn’t mean anything.”

Simeone has 10 days to appeal the suspension. However, he is no stranger to lengthy bans. He has been given an eight-match suspension in August 2014.
