Dillon Scores Bristol Food City 300 Win

Bristol Motor Speedway has historically been a single groove race track. Try telling that to the drivers who battled two and three wide for the win in Friday night’s Xfinity Series race. In the end though, it was Austin Dillon who took the checkered flag in a bizarre ending to the Food City 300.

Dillon survived the battle of attrition late as many of his primary competitors ran into trouble in the closing laps. Dillon, the 2013 series champion, picked up his first Bristol win and the 8th victory of his Xfinity career.

With 4 laps remaining, Kyle Busch dove under leader Brad Keselowski off the corner and tried to drift up in front of  Keselowski’s Penske Ford. However he wasn’t clear, caught the front bumper and it turned Busch into the wall. Ty Dillon had no where to go and piled into the back of Busch, ending his night. Then, while under the subsequent caution, Brad’s car ran out of fuel while leading. He coasted to pit road, ending his shot at the win.

There were several other incidents over the course of the night. Regan Smith had a pair of run ins, first with a lapped car that sent him spinning on the front stretch as leader Kyle Larson was bearing down. Later, Ryan Reed spun off turn four and Smith slid into Reed, damaging his front bumper. Ty Dillon also went for a spin in turn four, sliding to a stop on pit road. Gray Gaulding, making his series debut for Roush Fenway Racing, spun off turn two and backed his car into the wall. Daniel Suarez got turned by his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Erik Jones on lap 244, heavily damaging both cars and collecting Brennan Poole as well.

Austin Dillon led the final four laps and held off the field on a frantic overtime restart. Following him across the line in second was Justin Allgaier, third was Kyle Larson, fourth went to Elliott Sadler and Brendan Gaughan claimed fifth. Rounding out the top ten was Jeremy Clements, Darrell Wallace Jr, Blake Koch, Brandon Jones, and Corey Lajoie.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to the track on August 27th at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI.
