Cowboys Elect To Rest Key Players Versus Eagles

The Eagles were able to earn one last victory at home over the Dallas Cowboys. After trailing Dallas by seven, the Cowboys put in Mark Sanchez and the Eagles came back to score 27 points in their final game of the 2016 season. Dallas‘ choice to rest players was obviously a cautionary move as they didn’t want to risk any injuries to their key players.

Cowboys fans were able to see a little bit of Dak Prescott and even Tony Romo in this matchup. Prescott completed four out of eight pass attempts for 37 yards. Tony Romo was given one drive and he made the most of it. Romo completed three out of four pass attempts for 29 yards and a touchdown pass to Terrance Williams. After this drive, Jason Garrett decided to rest the two quarterbacks as he turned to Mark Sanchez to carry out the rest of the game.

The little glimpse that viewers were able to get of Tony Romo was a strong one. He looked like his normal self out there with three strong completions to his receivers. He eventually hit Williams on a beautiful touch pass in the left corner of the end zone. As a strong Romo supporter, it was amazing to see him go out there and perform like that. Romo truly made it look easy and he still has the ability to lead a team with elite talent. I think it’s safe to say that Romo will draw some strong trade offers this coming offseason.

The Eagles played the game like their season was on the line, as the Cowboys chose to rest players in prep for the playoffs. Jason Garrett sat out Ezekiel Elliott for the entire game. I assume he didn’t think the young running back needed to take any more hits out of the backfield. With three weeks of rest, Elliott should benefit and his body will hopefully be ready to go for the divisional round of the playoffs.

With Elliott out, Dallas relied on Darren McFadden, Alfred Morris, and Lance Dunbar to carry the ball against the Eagles. These three backs combined for 50 rushing yards off of 18 carries. The Eagles‘ front seven was able to contain the Cowboys‘ rushing attack. Even with the key starters out on the Dallas offensive line, Elliott’s talent was greatly missed through the rushing attack.

Carson Wentz ended his rookie campaign on a strong note. Wentz finished the game with 245 passing yards and two touchdowns. It was important for Wentz and the Eagles‘ offense to finish strong, especially against a Dallas team that was playing backups for the most part. Wentz needed to show that the team had built some chemistry and that they could show up for a game in which they were favored to win. Ending with a pair of touchdowns and a win over a division rival is a perfect conclusion for a rookie season. The Eagles defeated the Cowboys 27-13.

The Cowboys have a first round bye in the 2016 playoffs and will face one of three teams in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, or New York Giants will travel to Arlington to take on the Cowboys.
