Enfinger Wins Truck Race At Talladega

The Fred’s 250 at Talladega was no doubt looked at as a potential wildcard race, where anyone can win and no driver is immune from the ever present threat of trouble. Three chasers with trouble and Grant Enfinger in victory lane made both possibilities a reality.

Enfinger seemed to have the strongest truck the entire race and held off all challengers to claim his first career win. Enfinger, the 2015 ARCA champion, successfully blocked 2 lanes of traffic after the final restart with two to go.

Chase contenders John Hunter Nemechek and Matt Crafton both had mechanical problems end their day. For Nemechek, his title aspirations come to an end early in the race when his engine gave out on the backstretch with a massive eruption of smoke. He came into the race already outside the cutoff, so his last place finish guaranteed he would not advance. Crafton had a big enough cushion that his poor finish would not eliminate him from the next round.

Then the 05 of John Wes Townley got turned by William Byron in the tri oval. Most of the field got past without incident but championship contender Daniel Hemric spun and made contact with the wall. The team repaired the car and got him back out on the lead lap.

Then, the big one struck.

On lap 60, Timothy Peters made contact with Ben Rhodes, sending Rhodes hard into the wall and spinning back into traffic. Cole Custer, Hemric, Byron, Townley and many more piled in. Byron and Hemric both returned to the track after pitting for repairs.

Hemric, like Nemechek, came in on the outside looking in as far as the chase was concerned. He salvaged an 11th place run but the finish left him as the other driver who would not advance to round two of the inaugural truck chase.

Continuing their quest for the 2016 series championship are Byron, Peters, Crafton, Johnny Sauter, Ben Kennedy, and Christopher Bell.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to the track on October 29th at Martinsville Speedway. Live coverage of the Alpha Energy Solutions 200 begins at 1:30 pm ET on FS1.
