Ex-Egypt Soccer Star Mohamed Aboutrika Added to Egypt Terror List

Cairo, Egypt – Egyptian authorities have added retired soccer star Mohamed Aboutrika, who in 2008 was named the BBC African Footballer of the Year, to an official terror list for his alleged links with the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Aboutrika, known as The Magician, is accused of funding the banned Muslim Brotherhood, which Egypt’s government designated a “terrorist” organisation after the army removed democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi from office in July 2013.

The Cairo Criminal Court ruling by judge Khalil Abdul Aziz included a travel ban and asset freeze for three years, although the decision could be appealed within 60 days, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to brief reporters.

Aboutrika already had his assets frozen in 2015 based on suspicions of financing the Brotherhood — which emerged as the country’s dominant political force after Egypt’s 2011 Arab Spring uprising but was later purged when the army overthrew Morsi.

A former player for Al-Ahly. Aboutrika scored 38 goals in 100 international appearances and is widely regarded as one of his country’s best ever players.
