FIFA proposes new six-team playoff round in the World Cup Host Country for two places in the tournament

Zurich, Switzerland – The international soccer governing body FIFA proposes new six-team playoff round for two places in the new 48-team tournament. The tournament will take place in the World Cup host country.

At this point the mini-tournament is set to take place in November before the World Cup. Consequently, the final two qualifying slow would join the 48-team tournament. This, however, puts the Confederations Cup’s long-term future at risk.

FIFA announced the idea on Thursday, which also awards each of the six confederations extra places at the World Cup. If approved, the expansion will start in 2026 when its believe that North America would host.

FIFA says its bureau recommends giving UEFA three extra guaranteed slots, bringing its total to 16. It also increases Africa to nine, Asia to eight, South America to six, North America to six and Oceania to one.

With the exception of UEFA, the other five confederations would send one team for the playoffs. The Wold Cup host continent would provide the sixth.

“The host country would also automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and its slot would be taken from the quota of its confederation. In the event of co-hosting, the number of host countries to qualify automatically would be decided by the FIFA Council.”

The FIFA Council must approve the proposal on May 9 in Bahrain before coming into effect.
