Giancarlo Stanton Wins 2016 Home Run Derby at Petco Park With Record 61 Homers

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton has won the 2016 Home run Derby. Stanton started out his record-breaking derby performance by mashing 24 homers in the first round to defeat Robinson Cano. One of Stanton’s homers in round one was a 497-foot bomb that was the longest homer ever tracked by stat cast.

Stanton faced Baltimore Orioles slugger Mark Trumbo in the second round. He proceeded to hit 17 homers to defeat Trumbo and move on to the finals.

Todd Frazier, the defending derby champion, defeated Adam Duvall to face Stanton in the final round.

In a showdown of the young slugger and the defending champ, Stanton proved that his power was enough to defeat Frazier. Stanton smashed 20 homers to Frazier’s 13 to be crowned 2016 Home Run Derby Champion.

Giancarlo hit 61 homers en route to his win. That breaks the record for most homers in a derby by 20 bombs.

The 61 homers hit by Stanton traveled a total of 5.14 miles!

Perhaps the biggest snub of the All-star game, Stanton will watch the game from the sideline as he was not voted to take part. Stanton was asked why he wanted to participate in the Derby after not being selected to the game.

“I grew up watching this,” Stanton said. “Now I’ll have kids saying the same thing, they watched me do this. I like to return the favor.”

By Giancarlo Stanton standards, he is off to a disappointing first half of baseball. He has a .233 average with 20 homers and 50 RBI’s. Marlin fans hope that Stanton’s record-breaking performance will give him a spark in the second half. The Marlins are on the fringe of contention and will need Stanton’s bat to carry them into the playoffs.
