The Coyotes and Goligoski Have Agreed to a 5 Year Contract Extension

The Arizona Coyotes have signed defenseman Alex Goligoski to a 5 year contract extension. The negotiating rights to Goligoski were acquired by the Coyotes in a trade with the Dallas Stars last week. According to Elliot Friedman, the contract is worth just below $5.5 million AAV.

Goligoski spent 6 seasons with the Stars after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2011. He is known around the league for playing very well in his own zone. While his offensive numbers are not spectacular, he moves the puck well, having over 30 assists the past 3 seasons. He is very good 5-on-5, and can contribute on the powerplay and penalty kill.

After trading a 5th round pick to acquire Goligoski, he was brought in for a visit by the Coyotes. The Coyotes were very impressed by him, and started working on a contract. With Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Michael Stone already on the blueline, the Coyotes add a veteran defenseman who will help take the pressure off the teams two young defenseman. Goligoski was paired with rising star John Klingberg in Dallas, and is likely going to join the teams 2nd pair, adding a veteran presence to a young team.

General Manager John Chayka told reporters he feels Goligoski is a complete player. “We like everything about him. He’s a complete player. The game is trending exactly in his direction. He’s a transitional D. He’s a very strong defender but that doesn’t mean he spends all his time defending because he’s a good skater and puck mover that will get the puck up to our forwards, which is exactly what we need.”

Goligoski was considered to be a top defenseman available if he made it to free agency on July 1st. This extension may set the market for the top defenseman available. Keith Yandle, who’s rights were acquired by the Florida Panthers yesterday and was the top free agent heading into the offseason, will likely use this deal to get a pay raise from the Panthers.
