Harvick Victorious In Hollywood Casino 400

Kevin Harvick has a reputation as the NASCAR version of “The Closer” for his uncanny ability to win races that he has to win for one reason or another. The Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway only served to solidify that moniker.

After mechanical issues dropped him out of last week’s race at Charlotte, Harvick had to win at Kansas to avoid going to Talladega in a must win situation. After watching Matt Kenseth dominate early, Harvick stayed close and took advantage of a late race caution, staying out when others pitted to gain the lead. From there, Harvick checked out on the restart and pulled away to beat Carl Edwards by just over 1.5 seconds. Third went to Joey Logano, Jimmie Johnson was fourth, and Kyle Busch claimed fifth.

Now, Harvick along with Charlotte winner Johnson can rest easy this week, knowing they are locked into the third round of the chase courtesy of their respective wins. Others will likely spend the next 6 days a bit uneasy, knowing what they need to do at one of the biggest wildcard races on the schedule.

Chase contender Martin Truex Jr had a fueling issue with his number 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota that dropped him back into the field. Truex would recover to finish the race in the 11th position. Then on lap 189, fellow chaser Brad Keselowski spun into the infield grass, severely damaging the front of his Penske Ford. Keselowski’s 38th place finish leaves him in a tough position heading to next week’s elimination race at Talladega. Another chase competitor sharing in the misfortune on Sunday was rookie Chase Elliott. Elliott’s car was strong early on but with 23 laps to go, a flat tire left him limping to pit road. He dropped 3 laps behind, staggering home in 31st.

The second round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship concludes on October 23rd at Talladega Superspeedway. Live coverage of the Alabama 500 will air on NBCSN and MRN Radio at 2 pm ET.
