Hope solo has been suspended six months from the USWNT

Chicago, USA – United States Women’s National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo has been suspended six months by U.S. Soccer for unfortunate comments made towards the Swedish national team after losing in the quarterfinals in Rio 2016, US Soccer has announced.

U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said Wednesday that comments Solo made after the U.S. lost to Sweden during the Rio Olympics were “unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players.”

Solo called Sweden a “bunch of cowards” after the Swedes beat the U.S. 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament.

“Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we’ve had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. National Team member, U.S. Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action.”

The suspension is effective immediately.

In 2015, Solo had been suspended for 30 days for conduct related to an incident at the team’s training camp.

Last month, she became the first goalkeeper – male or female – with 100 shutouts in international competition.

Now, Solo will not be eligible for selection to the national team until February.
