Veteran forward opts for one-year deal with Dallas

DALLAS-With all the hoopla surrounding World Cup roster replacements yesterday, you may have missed the news that the Dallas Stars added another scoring threat to their arsenal.

The Stars signed veteran free agent Jiri Hudler to a one-year, $2 million deal on Wednesday.

Hudler split time with the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers last season, tallying 16 goals and 46 points in 72 games last season. He added one assist in the playoffs during the Panthers’ first-round loss to the New York Islanders.

While he may have had a down year last season, Hudler was just a season removed from scoring a career high 31 goals and 76 points in 78 games with the Flames.

In 676 career games, the Czech Republic native has accumulated 161 goals and 417 points.

A three-time 20-goal scorer, Hudler has also won a Stanley Cup as a member of the Detroit Red Wings back in 2008.

Dallas general manager Jim Nill was a part of the Red Wings organization during that time, as well as when Detroit drafted Hudler in 2002. Nill’s familiarity with the former second-round draft pick is part of the reason the Stars went after him.

While speaking to the media yesterday about the signing, both Nill and Stars captain Jamie Benn discussed how Hudler’s signing adds depth to the team.

Not only does the signing add depth, it also adds another scoring threat, as if Dallas needed it.

Hudler joins a roster that last season was the NHL’s highest scoring team. The Stars 265 goals, a league-high average of 3.23 goals per game.

Nill prjoects his new signing will be a top-six forward. More than likely he will play with Jason Spezza on Dallas’ second line. He could also find time on their second power-play unit.
