Importance of Golfers Participation in Olympics

First off, Congratulations to Justin Rose for winning the Gold Medal at golfs return to the Olympics.

Golf returned to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years this week. With the excitement that brings to the golf community, there has also been some criticism surrounding it. Henrick Stenson (5th in the OGWR) was the highest ranked player in the world in the field. Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, and Danny Willet are the only other golfers in the field that are ranked in the top 10.

Olympic golf is going to take some time for people to grow into to. In everyone’s current lifetime they haven’t experienced what happened this week, and for a lot of those golfers you could imagine that they look at competing in the Olympics lower on their priority list. To most golfers you would think that winning a Major would be number one on their list.

The hectic schedule of the PGA and European Tour for the last month did not help. The Open Championship, the PGA Championship, and the Olympics were all within a 5 week span of each other. That is a lot of important golf in a short time period. It does not slow down anytime soon for those golfers either. With the start of the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs at the end of this month and the Ryder Cup next month.

This could change by the time the 2020 Olympics roll around, because the players that did participate in the tournament had nothing but good things to say about it. Also if the PGA Tour is able to adjust the schedule so it is not so packed around this time of the year it would help. Which is why when the Tokyo Olympics starts in 4 years, I believe that more of the games top golfers will be participating in it.

Avid golf fans were going to watch this tournament no matter who was playing in it, but the casual golf fan may only check in if he hears the names of Jordan Spieth or Jason Day.

With this new marketing campaign called “Grow the Game” to convince more young people in diverse areas around the world to start picking up clubs it is important for golfs top athletes to be present. The Rio De Janeiro Olympic Golf Course where the tournament was played will be open to the public when the Olympics is over. This is a big move to try to expand golf in Brazil.

So why is it so important for the top golfers to participate in the Olympics? Get the casual golf fans to start watching more golf.
