Is Pablo Sandoval On The Move?

Could Pablo Sandoval have played his last game in Boston?

2 years ago, Pablo “The Panda” Sandoval left San Francisco to sign with the Boston Red Sox for a 5 year, $95 million contract. He didn’t leave his former team on the best of notes, as problems about his weight were frequently brought up as a concern by the Giants. In what was a bitter ending to an otherwise happy marriage that led to 3 World Series in his 7 years with the team, Panda moved on.

Flash forward to the 2016 Offseason and Sandoval has yet to make an impact with Boston. Having missed most of 2016 after shoulder surgery, and missed some time in 2015. Sandoval has only played in 129 games out of a possible 324 games with the Red Sox (not including post season.) In his injury marred stint with the team, he has only hit .242, a career low for him.

At the start of the 2016 season, he had lost the starting job to Travis Shaw out of spring training. This might be enough for Boston to hit the reset button on one of their worst deals in recent memory. Sandoval may benefit most from the change in scenery, and could even possibly head back out west.

San Francisco held preliminary talks with Boston about a possible trade to reacquire their former World Series MVP and All-star third basemen. With the trade of Matt Duffy, it leaves a hole open at 3rd base as Eduardo Nunez is slated to start the season atop the depth chart at third, unless IF Christian Arroyo can impress the Giants enough in spring training to capture the starting job.

While Sandoval’s big contract does make it hard to deal him, and he has a limited no trade clause (he can block trades from up to three teams.) it might be time for the Panda to escape Boston. A reunion with San Francisco might make the most sense for him as he enjoyed success in his time there to the tune of three World Series titles, and the team is only a piece or three away from being a legitimate World Series contender.

The Red Sox would be smart to try to find a suitor for Sandoval, and he would be smart to hit the reset button on what has been an awful stint in a place that he hasn’t looked at home.
