With three home runs in three games since coming off the DL, is Yoenis Cespedes the Mets savior?

Thursday marked the 15th day that New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes had been on the DL with a strained right quadriceps; It was an injury that Cespedes had apparently been playing through for a while. In the 14 games leading up to the DL stint, Cespedes hit .205 with only one home run and 7 RBI’s.

Cespedes had this to say about how he feels now:

“When I’m up at the plate to bat, I’m able to swing better now that I have that strength back in my leg.”

In only his second game back from the DL, Cespedes hammered two home runs against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. He ended the day after going 3-5 with 3 RBI’s in the Mets 9-5 win.

Many Mets fans of course remember last season when Cespedes was brought over from the Detroit Tigers and proceeded to lead the Mets to the World Series. In his 230 at-bats after that trade, he hit .287 with 17 home runs and 44 RBI’s. The Mets need that kind of production again as they currently trail the Washington Nationals by 11.5 games in the NL East and the St. Louis Cardinals by 4.5 for the second NL Wild Card.

Cespedes was not done with his amazing comeback from the DL. On Sunday, he cranked his third home run in as many games as the Mets beat the Giants 2-0. Cespedes’ home run was the only offense for the Mets as Noah Syndergaard pitched 8 shutout innings for New York.

With the homer on Sunday, Cespedes now has 25 on the season and is batting .293. With the Mets chances at the playoffs getting slimmer everyday, it will take the Mets All-Star outfielder to pull them out of the hole that they are in.

Of course nothing is impossible but over the course of the next few weeks, we will see if in fact Yoenis Cespedes is the Mets savior.
