Isaiah Thomas: Little Man with a Big Game .

We all love stories about the underdog who overcomes the most unlikeliest of circumstance only to defeat their big bad opponent.  We relish at movies when we see teams trying to beat the odds.  Well there is no need to go to any Hollywood movie if that is what you are looking for.  All you need to do is tune in to a Boston Celtics game these days and you can witness an underdog story in real-time.

That story comes in the form of a 5-9 guard out of the University of Washington.  Isaiah Thomas would forego his Senior year for the Huskies and enter the NBA draft in 2011.  Hoping to be picked high in the draft, he saw himself fall all the way down to the 60th and last pick where the Sacramento Kings picked him.  Thomas would have a good start to his career in Sacramento as he joined the likes of Calvin Murphy (twice), Dana Barros, Damon Stoudamire, and Michael Adam as the only players under 6’0″ tall to average over 20 points per game and 6 assists per game in a season.

Even with respectable numbers in Sacramento he was still dealt to the Phoenix Suns in a sign and trade deal on July 14th, 2014.  After a surgery to repair his wrist, Thomas showed again that he had the ability to play in this league.  The problem was that he was buried as the 3rd string point guard and struggled to break-through for the Suns.

However, just moments before the trade-deadline ended in 2015 something magical happened for Thomas.  He was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Marcus Thornton and a 2016 first-round draft pick. You could say that the Boston Celtics saved Thomas, but Celtics fans feel like Thomas may have saved the them.  As good as Thomas had looked at times, few could have imagined how big this little mans game would become.

In a League littered with outstanding point guards Thomas stays right in step with many that people say are the best.  It’s hard to call Thomas one of the top point guards in the league when you look at the names on the list, but it’s also hard to argue that he shouldn’t be in the conversation as one of the best too.

If we take a look across the league at some of the top point guards we will see that Thomas stacks up very well against them. Let’s take a look at some stats to see where he ranks currently in the league

According to the 2016-17 Hollinger Statistics ranking point guards Isaiah lands at the 3rd spot in Player Efficiency Rating at 26.82.  He only trails Russell Westbrook (29.74), and Chris Paul (27.40).

Thomas also finds himself near the top in Points per game. Leading the way is Russell Westbrook at 30.8 ppg and Thomas lands in the 4th spot overall in the NBA and second among point guards at 28.6 ppg.

There is no doubt that when we talk about top point guards in the league, you can expect to keep hearing the name Isaiah Thomas popping up.

This man may be little in stature, but he is proving himself to be large in impact for the Boston Celtics.
