Jeff Gordon Named Grand Marshal For NASCAR Euro Race

The grand marshal for a NASCAR race is a role generally reserved for executives of a race sponsoring company or celebrity promoting a movie, book, album, or other related event. However, the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series finale in Belgium will have a grand marshal who has done a little racing of his own.

Four time Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon will be on hand to help get the action started at the Zolder Circuit in Zolder, Belgium on Oct 9th. In a statement Gordon said, “I’ve been to Zolder before and I am really looking forward to see the NASCAR Euro Series race there. I’ve become friends with (series points leader) Anthony Kumpen and I’ve heard great things about the series’ popularity. I’m looking forward to seeing it firsthand.”

As an added bonus, it’s a visit to the homeland of Gordon’s wife, Ingrid Vandebosch. Vandebosch is orginally from Belgium

The series is also where NASCAR Next member Alon Day competes regularly. Day has three career wins in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series.

Gordon, a 93 time winner in the top level of NASCAR, earned his first top ten finish of the season at Dover International Speedway in a substitute role while Dale Earnhardt Jr continues his recovery from concussion related symptoms. Gordon has one more start scheduled this season, at Martinsville Speedway, the site of his final win one season ago.
