Jerry Lawler, The King of Memphis…BBQ??

He’s conquered the wrestling ring, he’s conquered the announcer’s position, and now, WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler, is ready to conquer another avenue. BBQ. The King now has a restaurant establishment to his name, King Jerry Lawler’s Memphis BBQ Company, which opened up on Monday.

The restaurant, which is located at 465 North Germantown Parkway, is filled with photos of wrestling nostalgia from Lawler’s 46-year career, while his matches play over the TV screen hanging in the dining area.

When asked why he decided to open up a barbecue restaurant, Lawler replied:

“There are two things that are synonymous with Memphis, Tennessee — barbecue and wrestling. And I’ve already done the wrestling. We just wanted to jump in and challenge all of these other barbecue restaurants in Memphis. It’s going to be like, ‘The King has never backed down from a challenge.’ We’re going to prove that we’ve got championship barbecue right here at the King’s place.”

Besides the BBQ ribs, customers can also order sandwiches, suitably named “slamwiches“, with such names as The King (pulled pork), Rude Awakening (smoked sausage), the Southern Champ (smoked chicken breast) and The Ravisher (chopped brisket), all of which you can “Make it a full nelson” by adding slaw to your sandwich. The sides are even called “ring sides”.

When talking about the service for the customers, which they can order at the counter, King replied:

“This is going to be like a fast-paced wrestling match. Our concept here is you come in the front door, you see the menu boards, you see the pictures of the food, and within four minutes of you ordering you’re going to have your food and sitting down and having it  in your mouth.”

Customers can also pick out their own rubs for their BBQ ribs, with flavors ranging from “The King’s original rub“, Apple Royal rub, Cherry Bomb rub, and Pile Driver pecan rub.

Jerry Lawler also spoke a little about his other restaurant, King Jerry Lawler’s Hall of Fame Bar & Grille, over on Beale Street, which he runs along with a group who will be helping him run the new establishment, as well. Said Lawler:

“We have an ownership group, some of the same people that are involved with the Bar & Grille down there and some other people as well.

With the popularity of wrestling and my name and the Memphis barbecue, the franchise opportunities are amazing. Especially in this Southern region.

I put out a couple of tweets about it this morning and we’ve had amazing interest. We had people from Glasgow, Scotland, and Belfast, Northern Ireland, inquiring if they could get a franchise in their countries. And, of course, it’s going to be available. We may go worldwide with this thing.”

Who knows? You may just see a Lawler BBQ in your neighborhood soon.
