Brewers catcher Johnathan Lucroy exercises “no-trade” clause

As the trade deadline draws closer, teams like the Milwaukee Brewers are looking to sell off some big name pieces like catcher Jonathan Lucroy.

Lucroy is having a good year as he is batting .300 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI’s. He is a 2-time All-Star and has drawn trade interest from teams like the Cleveland Indians.

One problem with the Indians being interested in Lucroy is that the Indians are on Lucroy’s no-trade list. He is under contract this season with a team option for 2017. In order for Lucroy to approve the trade to Cleveland, they would have had to get rid of the 2017 team option.

The Indians also could not guarantee that Lucroy would be their starting catcher in 2017. With Yan Gomes on the DL for the Indians, Lucroy would have been the starting catcher until Gomes came back. He made it clear he did not want to be anything but a catcher in 2017 and that was the driving reason behind him vetoing the trade.

This vetoed trade hinders the Brewers plans to rebuild their farm system. They were due to receive four minor league prospects for the All-Star catcher.

With the Brewers firmly out of playoff contention this season, it will be interesting to see what other moves they can make to rebuild their farm system for future seasons and see where else Lucroy may end up. The MLB trade deadline is August 1st at 4pm eastern time.
