New York Mets Sign Jose Reyes To A Minor League Deal

33-year-old shortstop Jose Reyes has signed a minor league contract with his former team, the New York Mets.

Reyes is expected to play in the minors for a week to 10 days before joining the big league team.

In 1999, the Mets signed Reyes as a teenager. He played 12 seasons with the Mets and won a batting title in 2011. In 2012, he inked a 6 year, $106 million deal with the Miami Marlins.

He eventually ended up with the Colorado Rockies after playing three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays.

On October 31st, Reyes was arrested after an altercation with his wife in Hawaii. He was suspended by MLB through May 31st. As a result of his suspension, Reyes lost over $6 million in salary.

Thursday, the Rockies placed Reyes on waivers that would grant him release from the club.

Reyes became a free agent Saturday and signed with the Mets on the same day.

After his suspension, Reyes played 9 games with the Rockies Triple-A team. He hit .303 with 2 homers and 2 RBI’s in 33 at-bats.

The Rockies still owe the shortstop around $39 million minus $507,500 that the Mets will pick up.

During his time in the minors, the Mets plan to have Reyes get some experience in the outfield. It is hoped that in some way Jose Reyes can provide a lift to the injury riddled Mets.
