Katsuyori Shibata Injured, A Possible Career Ending Injury?

New Japan Pro Wrestling star Katsuyori Shibata may have headbutted his last opponent, if what his doctor indicated holds any weight. Shibata was rushed to a hospital, following his match with Kazuchika Okada at NJPW’s event “Sakura Genesis“.

After the examination, he was diagnosed with a Subdural Hematoma, a collection of blood outside of the brain; a likely result of one of Shibata’s signature headbutt. He hit Okada with one during the match, leaving fans in attendance in awe.

Hitting opponents with his lethal headbutt, fans typically witness Shibata with a healthy stream of blood flowing from his forehead. Wearing it like a badge of honor.

His headbutt is known as one of the stiffest, if not the stiffest, headbutts in the business.

Surgery was performed in order to drain the excessive blood, which was a success. Reportedly, Shibata is in stable condition. However, according to a report by Dave Meltzer, there is a 50% chance that Shibata may have wrestled his last match.

Later, Shibata’s doctor gave his opinion on Katsuyori’s chances of returning to action:

“It is said that it can easily recur. If he still wants to be a pro wrestler in the future, strict examinations will be necessary. I am not optimistic at all.”

Examinations, a change to his style, and its possible that he could return, of course. And it is all dependent on positive results of those examinations.

For Katsuyori Shibata and his fans, it looks like it could be a long road ahead.
