Kevin Harvick Holds Off Carl Edwards To Win The Good Sam 500 At Phoenix International Raceway

In an overtime shootout, Kevin Harvick beat Carl Edwards by a hundredth of a second after making contact multiple times coming to the checkered flag to win the Good Sam 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. This was the eighth victory for Harvick at the 1-mile track, and it was the closest margin of victory in PIR’s history. Denny Hamlin finished 3rd, followed by Kyle Busch, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to round out the top 5.

Kevin Harvick led a race-high 139 laps, including the last 79, on the way to his first win of the season. It’s the No. 4 team’s first win since the fall Dover race last year.

Biggest story was Melted tire beads led to tire failures for five drivers during Sunday’s race at Phoenix International Raceway, according to Goodyear. Ryan Newman, Paul Menard, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Brad Keselowski and Kasey Kahne each hit the wall after tire failures and was the cause of brake heat melting tire beads on all of them.

Other storylines during the Good Sam 500 included:

  • Kevin Harvick moved into the lead of the Sprint Cup points standings with his victory.
  • Rookies Chase Elliott (8th) and Ryan Blaney (10th) both finished in the top 10 for the second time this season.
  • All race leaders finished within the top 5 .

The next race on the Sprint Cup Schedule is the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California on March 20th.
