Kluber cuts down Cubs bat’s for Game 1 Win

Corey Kluber came to play in Game 1 of the World Series, striking out 8 in the first 3 frames becoming the first pitcher in World Series history to do so. In his first World Series start Kluber tossed 6 scoreless innings of  4 hit baseball before being removed in the 7th after giving up a leadoff single. Kluber finished with no walks and 9 strikes out. Meanwhile he was helped offensively by a Jose Ramirez single in the first with the bases loaded and Brandon Guyer getting hit by a NLCS CO-MVP Jon Lester pitch to push across the second run of the inning.

Kyle Schwarber made hist first appearance since tearing his ACL after just two games on April 7th. Many doubted Schwarber would be back at all this season and let alone to DH the first game of the world series. Schwarber would give the Cubs a big jolt with a long double off the wall that just fell short of a home run, for his first hit in more than a calendar year but would not come around to score. Schwarber became the first NL non-pitcher to record a  hit in the World Series without recording one in the Regular Season.

Roberto Perez would one up Schwarber by launching a rocket off Lester into the seats to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead in the 4th. Kluber would cruise along until he allowed a lead off single to Ben Zobrist in the top of the 6th before getting lifted for ALCS MVP Andrew Miller.

Miller would start his outing by walking Kyle Schwarber and allowing a single to NLCS CO-MVP Javier Baez to load the bases. He would respond by getting Contreras to fly out to shallow CF, and then striking out Russel and Ross on sliders. The Cubs would then again threaten in the 8th getting runners on the corners with 2 outs but Miller would strike out Schwarber to neutralize the threat.

Maddon would use 4 relievers, Strop who went 2/3rd’s of an inning, Wood who went just 1/3rd, Grimm 1IP, and Rondon who was brought on to snuff out a possible Indians rally in the 8th inning but would serve up Roberto Perez’s second homer of the game giving him 4RBI’s on the night. Davis would follow-up with a double to right field before Strop got Kipnis to ground out to end the 8th.

Cody Allen would come on in the 6th to finish the combined shutout, striking out Baez before allowing a double to Contreras off the wall in right field that almost carried for a home run. Allen would then strike out Russel and get pinch hitter Miguel Montero to go down swinging to give Cleveland first blood in the series of droughts.
