Defenseman avoids Free Agency with Signing

BOSTON-You can scratch defenseman Torey Krug‘s name off the list of players that will be available when free agency in the NHL begins tomorrow.

Krug signed a four-year, $21 million contract on Thursday to remain with the Boston Bruins.

The 25-year-old blue liner, who would’ve had quite a few suitors in free agency, had a career offensive season in 2015-16. Krug tallied four goals and a career-high 44 points in 81 games. That was enough to lead the Boston blue line in assists and points.

Not only was he their biggest offensive producer on the back end, he was also the Bruins’ second-most used defenseman. He averaged 21:36 of ice time per game. That was only behind captain Zdeno Chara on the entire roster.

The new deal keeps Krug from becoming a restricting free agent on Friday.

For a guy who went undrafted, Krug has made his mark on the Boston blue line.

In 241 NHL games, the former Michigan State Spartan has amassed 30 goals and 125 points. He has also tallied 16 points in 27 regular season games.

The Michigan native confirmed his re-signing with Boston in a tweet earlier today.
