Kyle Busch Sweeps Weekend, Wins Brickyard 400

Just like last years race, Kyle Busch used the Sunday feature to sweep the whole race weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Kyle started on the pole and never looked back as he won Sunday’s Brickyard 400. JGR teammate Matt Kenseth finished second, with Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Larson rounding out the top 5

As noted above, Busch started on the pole and led 149 of the 170-lap race to score his second straight win at the Brickyard. A restart with two laps to go and then two overtime attempts couldn’t deny Busch, who drove away his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota straight to the winners circle for the second straight day and the 4th straight race at IMS. He also won both last years and Saturday’s XFINITY Series race on top of winning last year’s Brickyard 400.

“This Toyota was awesome today,” Busch told NBCSN in after winning Sunday’s Brickyard 400. “Man, it was just so fast and being able to get out front and stay out front, and not even some of my teammates could challenge us. We just had it hooked up, man. This thing was on rails.”

Other storylines from Sunday’s Brickyard 400 At Indianapolis Motor Speedway include:

  • In his first race since stepping down from active competition last year, Jeff Gordon showed steady pace to finish 13th in the Axalta sponsored 88. Jeff is substituting for Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the next two races as he continues to recover from concussion like symptoms.
  • Tony’s Stewart’s last race at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway was an up and down one. Stewart was running a solid race in the top 10 when he was caught speeding. After dodging some late race crashes, he settled for 11th, thus further cementing his Chase status.
  • Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski, Danica Patrick, Ryan Newman and Ryan Blaney were involved in a late wreck on Lap 154. Everyone but Edwards & Blaney continued as their cars suffered only minor damage.

Next Race Up: NASCAR heads back to the Pocono Mountains for the Pennsylvania 400 next Sunday.
