Kyle Larson Ends Runner Up Streak With 1st CUP Win Of 2017.

Kyle Larson capped off a streak of runner up finishes in the best way, winning Sunday’s Auto Club 400. This was his second career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win as he swept both races at Auto Club Speedway. Brad Keselowski finished second, followed by Clint Bowyer, Martin Truex Jr., and Joey Logano rounding out the top 5.

Kyle Larson resumed a weekend to remember after winning the XFINITY Series race the day prior starting Sunday’s race from the pole. From there, he dominated the first stage that saw chaos from the start. Denny Hamlin mistimed the start and caused a chain reaction that included Keselowski. The 2 car dropped back as a result. However, he was spun out by the 48 of Jimmie Johnson just laps later. Kevin Harvick and last week’s winner Ryan Newman also had damage from the race start incident.

The second stage saw Martin Truex Jr. take charge of the race. Truex showed off massive dominance in the stage winning effort, closing it out with over a 7 second lead. However, the rest of the stage was uneventful and no cautions fell during the stage itself.

But, the third and final stage was far from uneventful. Larson retook the lead on lap 164 during a cycle of stops and began cruising once more. That was until Gray Gaulding brought out the caution with 21 to go after hitting the wall. From there, the race took a turn for the worse for Matt Kenseth, as he also found the wall on the ensuing restart.

The yellow came out again with 11 laps to go as the other BK Racing driver Corey LaJoie spun. Several leaders stayed out, including then leader Denny Hamlin in the name of strategy. However, Larson with four tires took back the lead in NASCAR Overtime after Ricky Stenhouse Jr. brought out the yellow with 2 to go. He would never look back, sealing the The California Kid’s weekend sweep.

“We had a good last restart, had some good clean air and came home with the win,” Larson told Fox after the race. He also extends his points lead to 29 over Chase Elliott as a result of today’s win.

The Monster Energy NASCAR CUP Series heads back east next weekend at Martinsville Speedway for the STP 500.
