Lakers President names Earvin “Magic” Johnson new President of Basketball Operations

“Magic Returning to LA”

PRESS RELEASE — The Los Angeles Lakers, have hired Earvin “Magic” Johnson as the new President of Basketball Operations. The hiring of “Magic” also came with the firing of General Manager Mitch Kupchak. In addition to Kupchak being fired Jim Buss has been stripped of his duties as the Lakers Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations.

The Lakers have not made the playoffs since the 2012-2013 season, shortly after Jerry Buss passed away. With Kupchak and Jim Buss making personnel decisions, the Lakers have struggled to land big named free agents and remain competitive. “Magic” has been vocal about the Lakers struggles.

Time for “Magic”?

The Lakers have been through five coaches’ since winning their 16th NBA title in 2010. With Kobe Bryant retiring after the 2015-2016 season it’s clear that the Lakers are in rebuild mode.

Laker fans, sports analyst, and writers have all been questioning Laker management for the past few years. Jeanie Buss made it clear after the ending of the 2015-2016 season that the Lakers need change and want to return to being a powerhouse.

The firing of Kupchak leaves the general manager position open, which they have already, began their search for.

The hiring of Magic is a great move. Jeanie Buss and “Magic” have been close friends for some years so the move is powerful, familiar, and simple at the same time. Magic is the owner of the LA Dodgers, but has always been loyal to the Lakers.

Magic is a proud Michigan State Alumni. The Michigan native was drafted in 1979 by the Lakers. Magic is a 5-time NBA champion, 3-time NBA Finals MVP, and 3-time NBA MVP. The hiring of Magic will help attract free-agents to come sign with the Lakers.

Jeanie Buss believes that the recent acquisitions will help the Lakers will return to a competitive nature.
