Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has decided to reject a contract renewal and will evaluate at the end of next season

Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona and Argentina striker Lionel Messi has rejected the club’s offer of a new deal and will see out his current contract, according to Marca.

According to Marca, Messi informed the club that he would be rejecting the offer of a new deal while away on family holiday in July.

While Messi has often been speculatively linked with a move away from Barça in the past, this is potentially the most real possibility of it actually happening.

The reason for Messi’s reluctance to sign a new contract is reported to be his ongoing dispute with Spanish tax authorities. Messi was handed a suspended 21-month prison sentence in July for tax evasion after he and his father were found guilty of using tax havens in Uruguay and Belize in order to hide more than 4.1 million euros in earnings.

It is understood that Messi’s father Jorge and his advisers acted as intermediaries between the player and the club, informing Barca of the Argentine’s decision.

As such, it is now believed that Messi will refuse to decide whether to commit his future to Barcelona until June 2018 when he would be due to become a free agent. He has no intention of seeking a move and will honor the terms of his contract – he may well sign an extension at that point – but his future looks set to be unknown and rather uncertain for some time.

Without a doubt, countless European giants – Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain – will begin linking themselves to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in the upcoming days.

Contrary to all these reports from Madrid, Barcelona newspapers – Sport and Mundo Deportivo – have begun to dismiss the news and are reporting that the Argentine player is only delaying his decision but will start discussing it with the club in January.

Several weeks ago Pipi Estrada from El Chiringuito reported that Neymar Jr. would be making more money than Messi and that situation didn’t sit well with the 29 year-old-player.
