Luis Enrique will stand down as Barcelona boss at the end of the season

Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of this season. Enrique broke the news after Barcelona beat Sporting Gijon 6-1. The news may not come as a shock to many Barcelona fans. Enrique won the treble in his first season as Barcelona boss. But this year his Barcelona side are on the verge of an exit from the Champions League. They trail PSG 4-0 on aggregate and look all but out of the biggest club competition in the world.

Enrique thanked the club for the faith they have showed in him and described how he made the decision to step down,

“It is a difficult, measured and well thought-out decision and I think I have to be loyal to what I think,”

“I would like to thank the club for the confidence they have shown in me. It’s been three unforgettable years.” Enrique’s decision to step down will come into fruition at the seasons end when his contract runs out.

Possible replacements for the soon to be vacant managers position, Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli. There has been rife speculation for months that Sampaoli would be the successor to Enrique, and this news will only further cement that speculation. Another possible replacement could be Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde. According to Guillem Balague on twitter ” Barcelona would like next coach to be someone who understands the club.” Ernesto Valverde being an ex-player of Barca fits the bill perfectly.
