Luka Modric extends Real Madrid contract until summer of 2020

Madrid, Spain – Croatian midfielder Luka Modric signs a two-year contract extension at Real Madrid that will keep him at Santiago Bernabeu until 2020, the club have confirmed.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Real Madrid CF and Luka Modric have reached an agreement to extend the player’s contract with the club until June 30, 2020.”

Modric has enjoyed considerable success at the Bernabeu, winning the Champions League in 2014 and earlier this year, as well as two European Super Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the Spanish Cup.

Modric will speak at a press conference on Wednesday to talk about his decision to extend his deal in the Spanish capital, the second central midfielder to do so in recent weeks, following the path of Toni Kroos, who signed on until 2022. Modric’s is shorter because he is older – his new deal takes him up until he is 34. His old deal expired in 2018.

The 31-year-old joined Los Blancos from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and has made 180 appearances for the club, scoring 11 times, and has proved influential and a mainstay in Zinedine Zidane’s side.
