The Match that Never Was: Shawn Micheals Vs. AJ Styles

Fans have wanted it, there were rumors flying about it, and according to WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Micheals, the dream match of Micheals vs. “The Phenomenal One” AJ Styles almost came to be.

At WrestleMania 33.

During this week’s episode of Table for 3, which featured Kevin Nash, Micheals and Styles, the subject of the dream match came up, with Styles admitting that he put out the idea of the match, in hopes of it happening.

HBK spoke on how WWE CEO Vince McMahon approached him about the idea, and how much he really liked it. He also went on to say that up until this year, he had never been approached to make a return to the ring. Micheals explained:

“Different writers, or this person, or producer, whatever, have asked. But, for the first year ever, it was the the first time Vince asked.”

The Hall of Famer also said that due to his recent stint, working and mentoring at the Performance Center in Orlando, that there were some who believed that a comeback was inevitable, although, it never came to fruition.

Shawn Micheals still happens to be in good ring shape, however, one can only speculate if (and when) we will see the “Heartbreak Kid” back in a WWE ring. For now, fans will have to settle for making dream matches happen in their video games.

HBK doesn’t seem at all interested in returning to the ring anytime soon, but, perhaps if the situation is right, we may just see the Heartbreak Kid face off with the Phenomenal One.

Dreams can happen.
