Mats Hummels Returns to Bayern Munich

Munich, Germany – German international and Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels has agreed to return to Bayern Munich this summer on a five-year deal.

Hummels has not yet passed a medical with Bayern but the details of the transfer have been agreed. His contract with Dortmund was due to expire in 2017.

Reports indicate that Dortmund was demanding around €35 million for the Germany centre-back, which would represent the highest ever transfer fee for a Bundesliga player entering the final 12 months of a contract.

The 27-year-old, who is set to captain his team against Bayern Munich for the German Cup final, has been booed by home fans at the Westfalestadion since his desired to move back was made public.

Hummels is set to become the third BVB player to join Bayern since the summer of 2013, when Mario Gotze activated a release clause in his contract. In 2014, Robert Lewandowski moved to the Allianz Arena on a free transfer.

Chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “Mats is one of the best central defender in the world. With him, we can increase the quality of our team again.”

Bayern Munich new manager, Carlo Ancelotti, will now have two new players in his flanks to start a new season, in which the main goal will be winning the UEFA Champions League.
