Braves, Padres complete trade that sends Matt Kemp to Atlanta

The San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves have agreed on a trade that will send Matt Kemp to the Braves.

In exchange for Kemp, the Padres will receive third baseman Hector Olivera.

Olivera is a 31-year old from Cuba that signed a 6-year, $62.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. Since signing that hefty contract, Olivera got traded to the Braves. He has only played in 30 games since signing the contract; 6 of those games has come this season.

The Cuban has batted .211 with two RBI’s in those 6 games but was hit with an 82-game suspension for violating major league baseballs domestic violence policy. That suspension ends Monday and the Padres will hope to get some use out of the Cuban.

Kemp has not managed better the last couple of seasons since the Padres acquired him from the Dodgers. He has fared better this year posting a .265 average with 23 home runs and 69 RBI’s.

Kemp signed an 8-year, $160 million deal with the Dodgers in 2012. He will look to continue his “come-back” season with his new team in Atlanta.

Both of these players are looking to get their careers back on track with new teams. Only time will tell with side of this trade will work out better but for now, it makes sense for both teams involved.

*It was later reported that the Padres’ may Designate Olivera for Assignment.
