Matt Kenseth Wins AAA Drive for Autism 400 At Dover International Speedway

After a series of miscues and miscalculations kept him from winning while his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates did this season, Matt Kenseth held off a furious duel with Kyle Larson to return to the Victory Lane Sunday at Dover International Speedway. Kyle Larson finished second with Chase Elliot, Kasey Kahne, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Martin Truex, Jr., and Trevor Bayne rounding out the top 10.

The victory is the seventh in 12 races this season for Joe Gibbs Racing. Kenseth’s victory and the 37th of his career. The win also means that all four JGR drivers have scored at least one Cup victory this season. Kenseth had been fast this season but saw his chances to win end in various ways, including losing the lead on the last lap of the Daytona 500.

“We needed this one for sure,’’ Kenseth told FS1 after the race. Indeed he did, as Kenseth punched his ticket into the Chase For The Sprint Cup with his long awaited win.

Other storylines from Sunday’s AAA Drive for Autism 400 at Dover International Speedway include:

  • Kyle Larson (2nd) and Chase Elliot (3rd) either tied or recorded their best career finishes Sunday.
  • Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth were at the front of the field on a late race restart with 45 laps to go. While Kenseth took off when the green flag dropped, Johnson’s car appeared to stall, resulting in an accordion-like impact. Among drivers involved: Johnson, Martin Truex Jr., Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle, A.J. Allmendinger, Jamie McMurray, Joey Logano, Aric Almirola, Kevin Harvick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
  • Tony Stewart‘s bid to make the top 30 in the Sprint Cup points standings, which would make him eligible to compete for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, took a hit in Sunday when his rear end broke and spewed fluid on the track on lap 343.

NASCAR’s finest make their sprint for a million dollar payday next Saturday night with the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
