Mel Kiper Talks 2017 NFL Draft On ESPN Conference Call

Yesterday, I had the outstanding opportunity to gain knowledge about the NFL Draft from one of the best draft experts in the country. ESPN Mel Kiper Jr held a conference call for media members  and I had the pleasure of representing TSJ Sports. After listening to everything Kiper said, here some things I took away from the conference call.

Very Deep Draft For Defensive Ends And Combo Outside Linebackers

Kiper was very high on this years defensive ends and outside linebackers in this years draft. Kiper was very high on UCLA’s defensive end Takkarist Mckinley. According to Kiper McKinley has the potential to be a very dominant end creating instant pressure. The Colts could be in play to draft a player with a similar motor as Robert Mathis. Not only was Kiper high on McKinely but was on several other players that included TJ Watt from Wisconsin, Derek Rivers from Youngstown State. Both Watt and Rivers should contribute early according to Kiper due to their high motors and athleticism. Another player Kiper was excited about was Charles Harris from Missouri. The star form Missouri has an explosive step and plays with physicality.

Expects teams to look to secure an impact player from a deep defensive end crop in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Who Has The Potential To Be The Best QB In The Draft

Surprisingly Kiper was very optimistic about Nate Peterman from Pittsburgh. According to Kiper, Petterman has the makeup to be the best quarterback in the draft. That might be surprising to people who thought Deshaun Watson or Mitch Trubiski was the best quarterback prospects in the draft. Peterman has elite arm strength and great pocket awareness that will allow him to be a teams starting quarterback. “I like him. He made me a believer when I watched him against Clemson. I do want to see him throw live and get a feel for how the ball comes out. I never saw him in person and you can’t get a feel for that stuff on tape.” – Mel Kiper

Will be very interesting to see which teams decides to select Nate Peterman!

Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker?

There seems to be some conversation about who is the best safety prospect in this years draft. Jamal Adams from LSU and Malik Hooker from Ohio State are the centerpiece of the conversation. Kiper predicts Adams to be a top 5 pick due to his unbelievable 40 time at his pro day (4.33) and his ability to dominate in every aspect of the game. Hooker meanwhile could slide due to durability issues however he does have a lot of Ed Reed in his game. Both are dominant players that can make differences on an NFL team. Kiper gave the edge to Adams due to him being a complete safety and playing at a high level for more than 1 season.

Time will tell who has the better NFL career.
