Blue Jays add to outfield depth with addition of Melvin Upton Jr.

Today, the Toronto Blue Jays announced they have acquired outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. from the San Diego Padres. The Padres will pay $17 million of the $22 million owed to Upton through 2017.

The Padres will receive minor league pitcher Hansel Rodriguez in exchange for the speedy outfielder.

Rodriguez is 19 years old and was ranked as the 18th best prospect in the Blue Jays organization.

Melvin Upton Jr. has bounced back from a couple of down years to post a .256 batting average with 16 home runs and 20 stolen bases. The addition of Upton allows the Blue Jays to rest regulars like Jose Bautista or Michael Saunders.

With both Bautista and Saunders becoming free agents at the end of the year, Upton serves as a sort of backup plan if the Jays cannot resign one or both of them.

As the Blue Jays look to make a playoff run, they hope that Upton can give a spark that will propel them past the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles.
