Mookie Betts, Daniel Murphy named MLB players of the month for July

Mookie Betts – AL Player Of The Month

Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts has been named the AL player of the month for July. Mookie had an excellent month as he batted .368 with 5 home runs and 15 RBI’s. Betts also had 10 doubles and 5 stolen bases in 23 games en route to his first player of the month award.

The Red Sox outfielder finished first in doubles and extra-base hits for the month of July. He also became the first Red Sox player since Carl Yastrzemski to have 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases before the All-Star game.

Betts, who was a first time All-Star in 2016, became the first Red Sox to score 75 runs and have 100 hits before the break. He joined Ted Williams as the only other Red Sox to score 75 runs before the All-Star break.

Mookie had a great first half and an even better month of July that landed him the honor of player of the month. For his accomplishment, Betts will receive a special trophy that he can enjoy for years to come.

With the pure talent that Betts possess, it would not be a surprise to see him win this award multiple times in the months and years to come.

Daniel Murphy – NL Player Of The Month

Washington Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy has been named NL player of the month for July.

Murphy, who played in 22 games in July, posted a major league leading 11 doubles, 18 extra-base hits and a .744 slugging percentage. He also lead the NL with 23 RBI’s and ranked 4th with a .346 batting average.

The All-Star second baseman belted 6 home runs for the month which ranked 10th in the majors but was the most for NL second baseman in July. Daniel had a 13 game hit streak from July 7th-27th and collected 17 hits in 22 total games.

To cap off his hit streak, Murphy hit his career best 20th home run on July 27th.

Murphy loved to see his former team in the month of July. In four games against the New York Mets, he hit 3 home runs and had 10 RBI’s. His stellar month of July has helped Murphy maintain a .345 batting average which is the best in the NL. He also leads the NL with 136 hits and 32 doubles while ranking second in the league with 79 RBI’s.

This is Murphy’s second player of the month award; the first such award came in the month of May.

Murphy will receive a special award for his accomplishments in the month of July.
