New York Giants Offseason Team Needs:

Big Apple Offense

The New York Giants made a strong 11-5 campaign in 2016. Unfortunately their season came to a screeching halt in the first round of the playoffs (http://www.thasportsjunkies101.com/packers-giants-wild-card-recap/). However, the Giants took great strides this year defensively, but regressed on the other side of the ball. New York will need to surround Odell Beckham Jr. with more talent in order to become a perennial contender.

Running Back

Last year the New York Giants were 25th in offensive yards per game and 29th in rushing yards per game. The Giants released starting RunningBack Rashad Jennings earlier this week. Although New York does have second year rusher Paul Perkins, he had a small sample size at 112 carries last season. Shane Vereen is a great third down back, but is more of a receiving back. Adrian Peterson has shown interest in the Giants and would be dangerous lining up behind Eli Manning. Though Peterson is a long shot, the Giants would have a chance with Isaiah Crowell. If the Giants were to look to the draft, then the Texas product D’Onta Foreman may be the answer. The running back is a large tote type of back, but only had 75 receiving yards this season. However he did rush for over 2,000 yards at 6.3 yards per carry.

Wide Receiver

The New York Giants have had one answer to this problem in recent years: Odell Beckham Jr. Sadly, they can not throw to him every passing down. While Sterling Shepard was a  great addition, the Giants need another outside threat. Longtime Giant Victor Cruz was released the offseason, and at 6’0″ he was the tallest of the receiving core. Unrestricted Free Agent Alshon Jefferey has the skill set to be a great number two, and at 6’3″ is a dominant redzone target. However the Giants could turn to Corey Davis in the 2017 NFL Draft. Davis out of Western Michigan had 19 touchdown last season paired with 97 receptions. He is compared to Demaryious Thomas out of Georgia, with just a step less of quickness. Both would fit nicely lining up opposite side of Beckham.

Quarterback

Which Eli Manning is going to show up this season? This seems to be the question heading into the New York Giants offseason year after year. After throwing 35 touchdowns in 2015, Manning threw 26 touchdowns along with 16 interceptions this past season. Much of the case for the lack of production can be attributed to the need of more weapons. However Manning is 36 years old and unless he develops Benjamin Button disease he will need to be replaced soon. DeShaun Watson out of Clemson could be just the QB to develop behind Manning. He showed a lot of precision placement, timing and versatility in Clemson’s championship run. Pat Mahomes, out of Texas Tech, threw for over 5000 yards, 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Mahomes only question mark scouts found is in his decision making.

The Giants have a young defense along with an experienced quarterback and a top tier wideout. With the right moves this offseason, they could very well end up in Super Bowl 52.
