New York Jets Offseason Team Needs – TSJ Sports

The future of the Jets falls directly on GM Mike Maccagnan, as the team must infuse talent into the offensive line

The New York Jets appeared to be making a strong push for playoff supremacy heading into the 2016 season. They were coming off a record-setting season, in which quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick set Jets‘ club passing records for touchdowns  in a season. Receiver Brandon Marshall set club records for  receiving yards in a single season (109 catches for 1,502 and 14 touchdowns).

Covered up were flaws in several areas, most notably, along the offensive line. Stalwart left tackle D’Brickashaw Fergurson retired abuptly after starting every game and never missing a snap or practice rep. The tackle spots have been the real problem on this line, though, with Ryan Clady, Ben Ijalana, and Breno Giacomini. Pro Football Focus graded the front five of the Jets as one of the worst units in the entire league. Center Nick Mangold has been a shell of his old self and ideally, will ride off into the sunset in a few seasons.

The quarterback play has been horrendous at best and team staffers are uncertain that the future signal caller in on its current roster. Bryce Petty has shown the moxy to potentially be groomed into that role but will they give him a shot? I highly doubt it.

The Jets are linked to Clemson QB Deshawn Watson in the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft but he is not a player at this time that could jump right into the top spot at quarterback. GM Mike Maccagnan has a tough task at hand to fill in major holes. Cornerback Darrelle Revis has had a down year but could bounce back in 2017.

Cornerback is a major area that needs upgrading;  Florida cornerback Jalen “Teez” Tabor would be a good fit at a great value. He has a first round grade and some off the field issues could drive down his stock but could be a Marcus Peters-esque type of find for the Jets.

The Jets have made a living finding late round gems in the past and this draft will be important that they bank on some of those late flyers.
