Florida Panthers : 3    New York Rangers:0

The Florida Panthers, coming off an impressive month of December which included a 11-3 record, good for 22 points, faced off against the New York Rangers on Saturday night, looking to start January in the same way they ended December, with a win. The Panthers went into the game with a 7 game winning streak, but haven’t beaten the Rangers in their last 7 meetings, dating back to April of 2013.  That would change, however, as the they shut out the Rangers 3-0, to continue their winning ways and extend their streak to 8 games.

Logan Shaw would score the first and eventual game winning goal, beating Henrik Lundqvist with the puck. After Corban Knight took a backhand shot, Shaw redirected it into the net, giving the Panthers a lead with just seconds remaining in the period.

The Panthers would pad onto the lead in the second, scoring 2 more goals in the period to enter the third with a 3-0 lead. After making a save on Alex Petrovic, Lundqvist gave up a rebound that would bounce off the leg of Panthers skater Vincent Trocheck and into the net. Brandon Pirri would score on the power play off of a one time pass from Reilly Smith to give the Panthers a 3 goal lead, which would hold for the remainder of the game.

Florida goaltender Roberto Luongo made 40 saves in the shutout, which was his 3rd of the year. It was also his 71st of his career, putting him 11th on the all time list. He also broke his own franchise record with his 7th consecutive victory, which was previously set in March of 2006.
