19-year-old becomes Youngest Captain in Team and NHL History

EDMONTON, AB-When the Edmonton Oilers drafted forward Connor McDavid 1st overall at the 2015 Entry Draft, it was pretty much a given that he would become team captain at some point in his career. Edmonton made that a reality pretty quickly.

The Oilers announced on Wednesday that McDavid will be the 15th captain in team history.

The 19-year-old center makes history with his captaincy selection as he becomes the youngest captain in Edmonton team history, as well as in the history of the NHL.

At 19 years and 266 days old McDavid overtakes Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog by 20 days for the youngest appointed captain. Landeskog was 19 years and 286 days old when he was give the ‘C’ by the Avalanche.

This isn’t new territory for McDavid, however. The Ontario native was captain of Team North America at last month’s World Cup of Hockey. He was also the captain of the OHL’s Eerie Otters during his junior days.

He joins an impressive list of players that have held the ‘C’ with the Oilers, including Doug Weight, Craig MacTavish, Kevin Lowe, and NHL all-time greats Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky.

McDavid will be looking to build off a pretty good, but short, rookie season. Injuries limited him to just 45 games during the 2015-16 campaign. However, he did not fail to make an impression, tallying 16 goals and 48 points, and being named a finalist for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.

Edmonton also announced that forwards Jordan Eberle, Milan Lucic, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will serve as alternate captains.
