San Jose Captain Nets Two Goals in 6-3 win

ST. LOUIS-The San Jose Sharks have had a tremendous run so far in the playoffs, led by captain Joe Pavelski. Monday night, Pavelski continued his impressive performance and now has his team one win away from their first Stanley Cup Final appearance.

Pavelski scored two goals to help lead the Sharks to a 6-3 win against the St. Louis Blues in Game 5 at the Scottrade Center to give San Jose a 3-2 series lead.

After giving up six goals at home in Game 4, the Sharks jumped ahead 1-0 just 3:51 into the game when defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored his first of the postseason.

The Blues, however, needed less than four minutes to tie the game when forward Jaden Schwartz netted his first goal in 13 games to get his fourth of the playoffs. St Louis would then take a 2-1 lead when veteran Troy Brouwer scored his eighth goal of the postseason with 4:52 left in the first period.

The teams would then trade power-play goals in the second period.

San Jose would tie the game 4:37 into the middle frame when Joel Ward batted a loose puck out of mid air to get his third of the playoffs.

The Blues would get it back, however, with 8:02 left in the period when forward Robby Fabbri blasted a slap shot from the point past goalie Martin Jones to put the home team up 3-2 with his fourth goal of the postseason.

Before the end of the second, though, Pavelski would get his team even again when he scored the third power-play goal of the period, his 11th of the playoffs, to send the contest to the third period tied at 3-3.

The U.S. Olympian then wouldn’t need a lot of time in the third to put his team ahead as he scored his second of the game just 16 seconds into the final period to put the Sharks up 4-3 for his third point of the night after assisting on Vlasic’s first period tally.

Empty-net goals from Chris Tierney and Ward with under a minute to go would seal the 6-3 victory for San Jose, giving the visitors a 3-2 series lead.

The Sharks now have a chance to punch their first ever trip to the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday in Game 6 at home (8 PM ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).
