Deportivo La Coruna confirm Pepe Mel as new coach

La Coruna, Spain – Former Real Betis boss Pepe Mel succeeded Gaizka Garitano as head coach of Deportivo La Coruna.

Following four straight defeats and a winless run lasting back to late December, the club decided to sack Garitano from his position.

Moreover, Deportivo are only two points above the relegation zone – having played one game less than the bottom three.

“Jose Mel Perez has become the new coach of Deportivo until the end of the season, with the option to extend,” a club statement confirmed on Tuesday.

Mel’s first match in La Liga will be against fourth place Atletico Madrid on Thursday. Following that match, the Galician club will travel to third-bottom Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

Depor have also announced the arrival of Roberto Rios as Mel’s assistant, fitness coach David Gomez, and analyst Jose Gordillo.

Most recently, the 54-year-old had taken charge of Real Betis before being dismissed in January 2016.

In addition, he has had spells at West Brom, Rayo Vallecano and Alaves.
